Greetings Cycling Family!
Last year’s Padyakan Ride and the Annual FCC Picnic was so successful that the FACT (Filipino American Cycling Team), and FCC Board decided to do a repeat performance. There was a great turnout of riders and picnickers for last year’s event. Everyone that has ever experienced a Padyakan ride and after-ride meal knows how delicious Filipino food can be. So, it is no wonder that it is so popular.
Like most of our events this year, due to the abundance of rain we had, the date for the Padyakan and Picnic had to be changed. The original venue was to be the Lost Lake (as in the recent past), but the swollen San Joaquin River had caused the Park to be closed because of high waters that were flooding the picnic areas. As with the other events we had to change (Everyone Loves Raymond, Kirch Flat, and Climb to Kaiser), the Padyakan was no exception.
So, the date was changed to Saturday, Sept 2, 2023. Who knew the area would still be flooded during the summer, with no indication that it would be clear in time for the event! A decision had to be made to change the venue due to the uncertainty of the park opening in time. FACT President Eric Faustino and his team were able to arrange to use the Clovis Hills Church campus to hold our event. This year’s ride and picnic will be the biggest yet with 200+/- riders and picnic attendees. The weather is predicted to be great, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone.
For those who didn’t get their packets Friday night, Saturday’s packet pickup will be from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM. Reminder: this is a casual ride NOT A RACE.
September is another great month for cycling events throughout the state. The weather tends to cool down a bit which makes for great riding. One of the big events that many of our Club members have attended over the years is the San Luis Obispo Cycling Club’s Light House Century on Sept 23, 2023.

TIMELY SAFETY REMINDER
Riding a bicycle is not only a fun and eco-friendly mode of transportation, but also a great way to exercise. However, safety should always be a priority. One of the cardinal rules is to wear protective gear—most importantly, a well-fitted helmet. Studies show that wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of a head injury by up to 85%. Always make sure that your helmet meets safety standards and fits snugly. Also, a great safety addition is a Rear View Mirror. Once you get used to using one, you won’t ride without it. They are great for keeping an eye on what’s coming up behind you, whether vehicle or bicycle.
Visibility is key. If you're cycling at night or in low-light conditions, equip your bike with front and rear lights and wear reflective clothing. This makes it easier for other road users to see you. Additionally, use hand signals to communicate your intentions to drivers and pedestrians.
Always follow traffic laws and road signs. This means stopping at stop signs and traffic lights, and riding in the direction of traffic. Maintain a safe distance from vehicles and be cautious at intersections where most cycling accidents occur. It means riding inside the BIKE LANES WHEN THEY ARE AVAILABLE, and riding single file when conditions dictate.
Lastly, keep your bike in good condition. Regularly inspect the brakes, tires, and chains to ensure they are functioning properly. A well-maintained bike is not just easier to control but also less likely to malfunction, thereby reducing the risk of accidents.
By adhering to these safety guidelines, you can enjoy a safer, more pleasant cycling experience.
