Greetings fellow Cycling Club members and cyclists of all ages and modes of riding.
We are sad to announce the passing of our dear friend and Club Editor Bill Reddington. He has been the club editor of the Rough Draft for several years. He passed away at his home on the afternoon of September 14th, apparently the result of a cardiac event. For those of us who knew him well, he was always a kind, friendly guy. For the Club he was always there to lend a hand whether working at a rest stop, loading equipment at storage, editing the monthly Rough Draft, and serving on the Club’s Board of Directors. He loved riding his road bike and gravel bike. His death was a shock to us all, especially his wife and family. He was a loving family man and lived a full and vibrant life. He will be sorely missed.
The Padyakan/FCC Picnic was a big success this year. We had over 200 members/riders and picnic attendees. That is the most attendance we have had at a club picnic that I can remember. The Clovis Hills location turned out to be a great venue to have the picnic. The weather was great. It was great to see so many of our members coming out to join the FACT Team to enjoy their ride. The Padyakan (Pedal) ride has been going almost as long as the FACT team for some 15 years. Combining it with the annual FCC picnic has been great as the FACT really knows how to do a picnic. The Filipino food they prepare is always fabulous.
How about a Bicycle Festival in Fresno, does that sound like something you would want to attend? Well, it is in the works for Oct 27, 28 and 29th. The City of Fresno is partnering with our sister City of Munster Germany (the bicycle capital of Germany), along with Fresno State University to host this Bicycle Festival & Transportation Conference. So, on Friday there will be speakers and meetings geared toward Transportation Infrastructure planning, an event get together on Friday night, a Downtown Fresno Mural ride Saturday morning Oct 28, and a longer ride on Sunday covering portions of the Great Central Valley Bike Route – Fresno Spur. Stay tuned for more details to come.
We have some great upcoming events this month. Not only two of our own but one that has been going now for several years, The Hammer Rally, which supports the Art scholarships at Fresno State funded by the Ed Lund Foundation. Ed Lund was a long time Club member, one of FCC's young racers on the race team of the 70’s. He suffered a fatal cycling crash a few years ago while riding the Levi Leipheimer Grand Fondo in Santa Rosa. To commemorate his life and his love of art his family along with the Bike Monkey organization formed the Hammer Rally Ride to raise funds to support scholarships for Fresno State Art Students. The Hammer Rally is a challenging race in the local Sierra Mountains on roads that Ed Lund often trained and rode on. The Rally is happening on October 21, 2023, in Shaver Lake. They are offering a 25% discount for Fresno Cycling Club members who register using the code: FCCxHammerRoadRally. You can register at Hammer Road Rally.
That’s it for now ride safe and ride legal.
The Prez Sez, Dennis Ball

BASSLAKE POWERHOUSE DOUBLE CENTURY
Oct 14 is the 18th Annual Bass Lake Powerhouse Double Century. This year we are excited to be selected to host the third stage of the California Triple Crown Stage Race as a feature of this year’s event. The Fresno Cycling Club is home to many great long-distance riders with many of our members having multiple double centuries over the years. Something special about this year’s Bass Lake Powerhouse Double Century will be the Double Century legion, Club member Richard Hoff, former Director of the Bass Lake Powerhouse DC, will be riding to complete his 200th Double Century for 40,000 miles. There are other riders that have registered to do our ride who as well have many Double Century rides completed. Register at https://fresnocycling.com/event-4992283.

Tour de Femme Donates $1,000 The success of the Tour de Femme this year resulted in Director Janet Lucido on behalf of the Fresno Cycling Club being able to provide a $1,000 donation to the Valley Children's Healthcare's Adaptive Sports Program. Our donation is an investment helping to fund lifesaving technology, advance clinical services and provide a safety net for children with little or no private medical insurance. The club received a letter from the Valley Children's President Robert V. Saroyan thanking the Club members for the support.

SILVER STATE 508
If you haven’t heard of this race before, it is probably because it is not in your purview of rides to accomplish. The race starts in Reno, Nevada and heads out across the desert for 254 miles then returns. Well believe it or not we do have members that do this ride. This year a big Congratulations goes out to our very own Roehl Caragao and his Tandem Partner Lori Hoechlin who last month set a new time record for the 60-69 mixed tandem category in the Silver State 508 race. Their winning time was 45 hours and 54 minutes. Great job Team Raging Redbacks.

Velo Kings Racing – Club Sponsored
Our very own Club member Mark Tucker, with Velo Kings racing team, defended his Title as the winner of the 2023 45-49 NorCal Championship at the Oakland Grand Prix races in September. This caps off a great season of racing for Mark and the Velo Kings Team.

Congratulations to Mark and the team.

Supporting Other Clubs
The Fresno Cycling Club loves to support other clubs and especially the San Luis Obispo Bicycle Club’s Light House Century. Of course it helps to have a popular and beautiful route to ride along the Pacific Ocean from Morro Bay to the Light House turn around. This year our club had nearly 50 more members do that ride, probably one of the most represented clubs.

AMERICAN RIVER RIDE - NOV 11, 2023
Autumn is here. That means that it is time to go to Sacramento to have a great ride on the American River Bike Path and watch the Salmon run. We will be staying at the Best Western Sandman Hotel, 236 Jibboom street, Sacramento, California 95814 (phone number 916-443-6515. This will be our starting point. We will be arriving on Friday the 10th and then on Saturday the 11th we will be riding to Folsom via Nimbus. The round trip distance to Folsom is 58 miles. If you would like to do a shorter ride, the ride to Nimbus is 47 miles round trip.
The ride starts at 8:30, so you can just drive up for the day. Lunch is at a wonderful Cafe, Karen’s where everything is homemade. Lunch may vary depending on weather conditions and daylight. Possible ride on Sunday if there is enough interest. You can always stop at the Ghirardelli chocolate outlet on the way home. You have earned it. Lots to do for non-riding family members (yes there is an IKEA and an outlet mall). Also a museum next door to the hotel. Old town Sacramento is within walking distance. Please call or e-Mail to confirm you are coming. Ride will cancel if no response. More information? Call Ken Herrington at 299-2275 or e-mail at campyherrington@sbcglobal.net.
