Fresno Cycling Club - August 2023

Rough Draft

August 2023

 Greetings Fresno Cycling Club members

Hope you all are having a great summer riding your bike. Of course, in the Central Valley that means dealing with the summer heat. It is possible to ride in the heat once you get acclimated to it, as long as you stay hydrated and either covered up or use sunscreen. Most of us, however, don't relish riding in the high heat, so we tend to get out as early as possible to ride in the cooler portion of the day. On the weekends, you will find riders headed to the coast or to the mountains to ride in cooler climates. Some of our ride leaders will post rides for such out-of-town ride opportunities on the FCC Ride Calendar.

Did you have an opportunity to watch the Tour de France?  Both the men’s and the women’s events? “The Tour” is the premiere cycling event of the World, with the most viewership worldwide. Much of the innovation that occurs in bicycling equipment happens because of new equipment that is utilized in the Tour de France. It is so cool to see racers from all over the world competing, and this year there were several American racers on various teams who competed well.  It is interesting to see the best racers in the world come together, with the top two young racers bringing a new domination to the sport. If you watched the Tour, you would know who they are.

Tour De Lakes

This year has been one for the Club's record books for having to reschedule and/or cancel our events. Much of this is related to our weather this past winter.  The most recent cancellation was July's Annual Tour de Lakes ride.  The asphalt on McKinley Grove Road is in such bad shape, we felt that it wouldn’t be safe for our riders to ride on while also having to deal with traffic.  The road degradation is the result of the record rains in the Foothills this year. There is just too much damage to fix with spot patches, as there are large sections where the whole top layer of pavement is gone. Unfortunately, not everyone has a gravel bike or mountain bike, which is what would be needed on that road. Hopefully, the road will receive some love soon so that it is rideable for by next year.

Link My Ride

If you haven’t gotten connected to the Link My Ride app, it is starting to get more activity as our members come on board. FCC member Natalia Owen has taken on the role of administrator. If you have any questions on how to get connected you can contact her. She can be found on Facebook at “Natalia Natalia”. You can download the app to your phone or tablet, create an account under Fresno Cycling Club (free), and start looking for rides or putting on your own rides to connect with other members.  www.linkmyride.com.

That’s all for now, hope to see you at the Annual Picnic/Padyakan ride in Sept.

Ride safe and ride legal.  The Prez - Dennis Ball

Advocacy Updates:

This past week our Director of Advocacy, Tina Sumner and I were able to meet with District #2 Supervisor, Nathan Magsig. During our May Is Bike Month ride with Nathan to the Corrals at Watts Valley Road and Pittman Hill Road, we had the opportunity to talk to him about bicycle safety and the needed improvements to our existing infrastructure. He advised Tina and I to put together a Priority List of roads that need improvement. Tina created a letter listing the priority items that made the most sense and didn’t require huge amounts of money to get accomplished. At our meeting, we presented the letter to Nathan. He will forward the letter to the Director of Public Works for the County to see what can be done.

Just a reminder for all our members. When there is an opportunity for input regarding bicycling advocacy, please take the few minutes necessary to express your opinions and desires regarding bicycling infrastructure and bicycling traffic laws. Your input helps back up what Tina proposes in the meetings. She works hard attending many government meetings to keep our club in the mix of all efforts to improve the safety of bicycling for all of us.

Action Alert: Currently the Fresno County COG (Counsel of governments) is seeking input from bicyclists and the community to help improve the bicycling and pedestrian infrastructure throughout the County.  They are seeking input to update the Fresno County Active Transportation Plan.
