FEBRUARY BIRTHDAY RIDE
Prez Sez – March 2026
Greetings fellow cycling club members and cycling community.
Spring in the Central Valley: A Time for Cyclists
As we roll into March, I’m reminded why this time of year feels so special for cyclists in the Central Valley. The mornings are still crisp, the foothills are turning green, and more riders are shaking off winter and returning to the road, the dirt (MTBing) and gravel. It’s the season when our cycling community really comes alive again, and lately it’s been great to see so many of you out on club rides, reconnecting with friends and building those early-season miles. Our monthly Birthday rides have been especially popular.
Club Activity and Community Spirit
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been impressed by the turnout on our weekend rides and the enthusiasm from both long-time members and new faces. Even during the cooler months, this club never really slows down—we just layer up and keep the wheels turning. Thank you to everyone who’s been leading rides, volunteering, and helping keep our cycling community strong. I'm seeing a renewed energy in our club with the increase in club rides. I see members that had allowed their memberships to lapse, get back involved in riding with our groups. This seems to be due in part to our new enthusiastic ride leaders Glen Medina, Ryan and Anna Stromer adding to the stalwarts that have been leading rides for years, Ken Herrington, Nancy Dooley, Tom Braner, Mike Thomson, Carlos Ramirez, Gary Lattus, to name a few.
A Personal Moment of Reflection
A few weeks ago, I had one of those moments that stays with you. I was riding with a small group in the foothills, the kind of ride where the conversation comes and goes and the sound of freewheels fills the quiet spaces. As we approached a climb, I noticed a member who hadn’t been out much over the winter. He was working hard, but he had that determined look we all recognize—the one that says, “I’m finding my way back.”
When we reached the top, he stopped, took a deep breath, and looked out over the valley. Then he said something simple, but meaningful: “I didn’t realize how much I needed this.” Not the climb. Not the workout. The connection. Moments like that remind me why this club exists. Cycling gives us clarity, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging. It brings us back to center.
Safety, Respect, and Preparedness
As more riders join us this spring, it’s important that we continue to ride with intention and respect. Clear communication, predictable movements, and awareness of those around us are the foundation of safe group riding. These practices aren’t just rules—they’re expressions of care for our fellow cyclists. And for those returning to the bike after some time away, a quick equipment check can make all the difference. Inspect your tires, brakes, chain, batteries and lights to ensure every ride begins with confidence.
Spring also brings its own challenges. Wind, damp roads, and debris from winter storms can create unpredictable conditions, especially in the foothills. Approach these situations with patience and caution. The goal is always to enjoy the ride and return home safely. One of our members recently hilt some sand coming down a hill causing him to go down and suffer injuries.
Upcoming Events and Opportunities
Looking ahead, preparations are well underway for our first major events of the year, the Everyone Loves Raymond Gravel ride on March 28, and the Cell Hill Century rides on April 25th. These events, along with Climb to Kaiser, and the Bass Lake Powerhouse Double forms the backbone of our annual calendar. These rides are a testament to what we can accomplish when we work together. Volunteers, route planners, rest-stop crews, and riders all contribute to creating experiences that leave a lasting impact. If you feel inspired to lend a hand, we welcome your involvement. Every contribution strengthens our club and supports the mission we stand for. Look for the volunteer link below.
Our Mission and Commitment
As a 501(c)(3) organization, the Fresno Cycling Club remains committed to promoting safe and legal bicycling for recreation and transportation throughout the Central Valley. Each mile we ride—whether alone, with a small group, or in a large event—helps shape a culture of responsible cycling. We are ambassadors for the sport, and our actions on the road reflect the values we share as a community.
Looking Forward
Thank you for your continued support, your enthusiasm, and your dedication to safe cycling. I look forward to seeing many of you out on the road as we begin another promising season together.
Ride with purpose, ride with pride, and enjoy every mile.
