Fresno Cycling Club - June 2025

Rough Draft

July 2025

THE PREZ SAYS.....

Greetings, it's that time of year when we all reflect on the past 6 months and wonder where the time has gone. Here it is the first of July and unless you were training for Climb to Kaiser, or on a weekly ride schedule, you may be wondering why you’re not in as good of riding shape as you want to be or think you should be at this time of year. Sometimes life just gets in the way of your plans, my mind tells me I need to get up early in the morning, go out and take a ride, but life has a different idea. That's why we are trying to make a concerted effort to get more organized rides to help motivate us to get out and ride. The July Birthday ride is July 5th. Look for more weekly rides on the ride calendar.

This year’s 46th Annual Climb to Kaiser & Tollhouse Century was a great success by all standards. We were able to go back to the Clovis Rodeo grounds for our Start/Finish. This year’s riders were treated to some amazing weather, and it made a big difference in the rider’s comfort and ability to complete the ride faster. With temps in the mid 80's on the valley floor and temps in the 50's at high elevations, it's amazing how it can affect the outcome of this ride. Out of the 86 finishers, there were 22 riders with times under 11 hours of those 14 were under 10 hours and 2 were under 9 hours. Ben Bowman, a 27-year-old first time C2K rider from Southern California came in first at 8 hours 42 minutes. The oldest rider to finish the C2K was a local rider, Mark Randall at 70. Thankfully there were no mishaps reported. I had nothing but positive comments from many riders I encountered.

The Tollhouse Century is one of the most challenging Century rides around and there were 36 finishers and 5 DNF's. It encompasses 100 miles of the C2K, riders as well were treated to great weather conditions. There were 41 riders that started, 36 finishers and 5 DNF's. Alexander Calkins of Clovis was the first rider to finish with a time of 5 hours and 45 minutes. The two oldest riders to finish the THC were Missy LeStrange, 72 from Visalia, and Joseph Harvin 71 from Marina.

I want to thank our many C2K volunteers who did an amazing job of providing top notch service to our riders in all aspects of the duties they performed. From the planning committee, the logistics coordination, the grocery shopping, the equipment loading team, the Rest Stop leaders and workers, the SAG team, the Communications Team, the after-ride meal servers, the venue cleanup crew, and the after-ride storage crew. With ridership being low this year we had almost as many if not more Volunteers than we had riders. This ride takes many volunteers to perform all the necessary duties to have a successful event. We appreciate the dedicated rest stop support we receive from the volunteers who have worked their rest stops, some for years, the Club’s Treasurer Elida and her crew staffing Rest stop #1 at Wildcat; the Filipino American Cycling Team (FACT) who staffed the Rest stop #2 at the Tollhouse Market; Gary Lattus and crew working the Tollhouse Road Rest stop #3; the Killer Bees group staffing Rest stop #4 & #8 at Shaver Lake; the Southern Sierra Cycling Club who staffed Rest stop #5 at Big Creek;Rosbi and her crew who staffed Rest stop #6 at Huntington Lake Shore resort parking area; the Kings County Cycling Club crew who staffed Rest stop #7 at Kaiser Pass;the Hansens and crew staffing the Pine Ridge School Rest stop #9 and the two Millerton Store Rest stop #10 staffed by B.B. Perez and her crew in the morning shift and Sherri Flynn and crew working the second shift. Again, a BIG THANK YOU to all of you who made this event possible.

Check for further information regarding our upcoming July Birthday ride, the Tour de Lakes ride, and the Climb the Coast ride with Southern Sierra Cycling Club Aug 1-3, 2025 listed below.

Have a great month of July, have a safe Independence Day celebration. See you on the road, on the gravel or in the dirt MTB style.

As always Ride Safe and Ride Legal.

Cheers,

The Prez
Dennis Ball

CLIMB THE COAST WITH FCC AND SSC AUGUST 2ND AND 3RD

The Fresno Cycling Club and the Southern Sierra Cyclists are riding at the coast on the weekend of Aug 2-3, 2025 to escape the heat. Two fun filled days on the bike with cooler temps and coastal views could happen for you if you sign up.

Saturday's ride starts in SLO and heads west towards Los Osos, around the back bay into Morro Bay before heading up the coast to Cayucos or Cambria. You will have great views of the many volcanic necks (one is Morro Rock) as you head out. The flower fields and coastal scenery are beautiful and traffic is light.

Sunday's ride starts in Cambria and heads north to Ragged Point on Highway One. The route heads up past San Simeon, where you might even see the zebra herd, up to Elephant Seal Vista Point, the Lighthouse, and the rugged scenic coast. For those wishing a shorter ride you can turn around at Elephant Seal Vista Point. Water and snacks will be available at Ragged Point.

Book your registration and rooms now so that you and you friends can enjoy a weekend of coastal riding, food and fun. There is a lot to do in the area and it is always better to share the experience with your friends.

These are supported rides with SAG and Rest Stops.  To cover the costs of SAG and rest stops the fee to participate is $25 for one day, or $40 if you want to ride both days.  Club members also will have to option to ride one day for free and work SAG or at a rest stop the other day.

There is a strict limit of 30 riders, per club, per day.  Registration for this event will open by June 10th.  Be on the look out for a club wide email with all the details and route maps.
