The Prez Sez:

Happy Independence Day!

As you celebrate the Independence of our Country, remember to enjoy it safely. Be mindful that the drought has created a High Fire Danger situation. Tell everyone you know to either not do fireworks this year, or if they are, be safe and cautious!

We can’t afford to have more unnecessary fires in our area. Fires are not only costly in terms of property and life loss, but also financial loss to fight them. On top of all that, they pollute our air, making it difficult to enjoy riding our bikes.

Our slate of upcoming bicycling events is as follows. (Unfortunately because of the pandemic restrictions not being lifted until last month, we have had to push all our events into the later summer and early fall). Keep an eye on the FCC Website for any updates to this schedule.

TOUR DE LAKES

Our first Club event this year is coming up this month on July 31, 2021. During the pandemic last year, this was the only event we were able to put on. So now that the pandemic has subsided we are excited to hold the event again this year. I hope you are ready for some challenging riding.  The cool thing about this ride is its flexibility: there are several options to the ride. The options include:

  • the long ride to Courtwright Reservoir and the medium ride to Wishon Dam, both starting at the Dinkey Creek Road park-and-ride, or nearby parking.
  • There is also the option to start at Dinkey Creek Bridge to do a short ride to McKinley Grove, or the longer ride to Wishon.
  • You could even do the Courtwright ride from Dinkey Creek Bridge.

Everyone who rides this event needs to be cautious and courteous while riding. The Dinkey Creek and McKinley Grove roads can be busy with traffic. Don’t bunch up on the road, and be sure to ride single-file when cars are present. Remember you can take the lane if it is too dangerous to share the lane. Be sure to be visible.

While this ride is free to all members, we ask that everyone register to do the ride, so we can determine how many riders to plan for.  For more information or to Register, click here: Fresno Cycling Club - 2021 FCC TOUR DE LAKES for members

GRIZZLY CENTURY

The Grizzly Century is slated for Saturday October 2, 2021. Registration will open on July 4th at noon. FCC will be teaming up with the North Fork Community to put on this great event.

This will be the 26th year of the Grizzly (having missed last year). Much of the route has been burnt by fires over the past several years, most recently by the Creek Fire last year. Although there has been a lot of the forest lost along the route, on a positive note the route is still as challenging as it has always been, and has actually opened up more views of the surrounding mountains.

This year we are excited to be adding a whole new route to the Grizzly Century Rides. For those who love gravel riding and want to switch it up, this will be a Gravel Grinder up Central Camp Road to Cold Springs Summit, then back down gravel roads to Beashore near Bass Lake, then around the Lake and back to North Fork, making it a Metric Century which will be approximately 32 miles gravel and 30 miles paved.

KIRCH FLAT CENTURY

Have you registered for the KIRCH FLAT CENTURY this year? It will be held on August 21, 2021. Sadly we weren’t able to have this event on its normal date of the first weekend of May this year due to the uncertainty of Covid-19 restrictions. BASS LAKE DOUBLE CENTURY

The Bass Lake DC is back for this year and is scheduled for Saturday October 9, 2021.  Our annual world-class Double Century is back this year!!  More information and Registration is now available at Fresno Cycling Club – 2021 Bass Lake Double

TOUR DE FEMME

Calling all ladies! The Tour de Femme is happening this year on Saturday October 23, 2021. This will be a ladies-only ride with all the men working the rest stops and SAG, providing the best support for this new ride. More information and Registration is open now at: Fresno Cycling Club - 2021 FCC Tour de Femme

EVERYONE LOVES RAYMOND GRAVEL RIDE

Our annual Gravel Ride will be happening this year on November 6th.  Registration opens in early August.  For more information see:  Fresno Cycling Club – Everyone Loves Raymond

As always, check the FCC Ride Calendar or Facebook for those daily and last-minute rides.

See you on the road,

The Prez:   Dennis Ball

THE CLUB DAILY RIDE CALENDAR

If you’re looking for rides, be sure to check out the FCC Ride Calendar. We have various Ride Groups regularly having rides to help you get out and get some exercise. You've got to keep those riding legs, heart and lungs in shape.

Local Bike Shops and Other Friends

PLEASE BE SURE TO DOUBLE-CHECK HOURS OF OPERATION

For many of us, eating and riding are the two major things in life.  We all rely on and support our local bike shops.  These are the people dedicated to making sure that we can all safely enjoy what we do.  A few local restaurants and other supporters go out of their way to accommodate cyclists.  Please be sure to support these folks, and tell them you are an FCC Member!
